What You Will Learn In The DBT Modules

About Our Online Dialectical behaviour therapy course

What to expect from our UK Based online DBT Courses

Our online Dialectical Behavioural Therapy is a 25-week module based course during which time the client works on four skill-based areas in a group setting while working on individual issues with their designated therapist*. Both components are necessary as clients become able to apply new skills in real life. It is highly recommended that clients complete each module twice. This is because learning to apply the skills during the first six months takes considerable effort and the second six-month period is where learning is compounded and becomes more integrated with the clients’ life and thinking style.

Each client takes part in a 2½ hour small online group session each week and full course members will have a one-hour session with a DBT therapist each week alongside phone coaching as agreed with your therapist.

*1-1 therapy work is only included with the full online course

What Our Clients Say About Our DBT Therapy

We take our client’s anonymity seriously and a name will only be feature if we’ve been given explicit permission to do so. For those who wish to remain anonymous no name will be featured with the review.

The DBT group is helpful in finding methods to allow for improvement of life experiences. I’ve found the group experience to be insightful with members sharing their personal experiences with the methods taught and how they have adapted them to make them fit to their specific needs. Making connections to the facilitators and group members dealing with difficulties and still showing up to help improve themselves is inspiring and encouraging to keeping the commitment to yourself of showing up every week. I’ve found group to be a safe space and being surrounded by supportive individuals you truly feel as if you have people in your corner and on your team building together.

I first came into contact with Home Counties Therapy two years ago and at that point was in a very dark place feeling like I didn’t have options or anywhere to turn to.

I have been seeing them on a 1.2.1 basis and have had group DBT sessions as well.

From the outset Lorna was welcoming, understanding and has helped me to get my life back on track. I’m now back in education, have a great relationship with my family and am feeling the best I ever have, this is all down to HCT guiding me along the way and encouraging me to persevere with change.

Jared

I have just completed a 6 month course of Dialectical Behavioural Therapy with Home Counties Therapy.

This course has been invaluable in providing me with skills that I did not possess before beginning the course. In particular I have found the interpersonal skills training and the distress tolerance tools to be helpful.

The trainers are compassionate and have fantastic knowledge of both the course material & the supporting psychology. They have a great way of helping every member of the group to understand the course material and apply it to our own lives. No one gets left behind.

Jackie

Through DBT and my 1-2-1 sessions I have noticed a change in myself and started to challenge my thoughts and have come to understand why I’m feeling the way I do.

My therapist has been fantastic! Home Counties has helped me a lot and I’ve got skills to set me for life I love the fact that if I am having a crisis someone is always at the end of the phone to help me get through it.

Highly recommend!

Jen

DBT has completely transformed my life, giving me the tools to cope with everyday challenges. I went from struggling to use the tools and not understanding how to utilise them and over time it has become easier and a way of life. I have my good and bad days like everyone but with the constant reminder that I have DBT to help me if I have my really bad days which pulls me through. Since using DBT I have less bad days which it takes me quicker to recover from. I recommend DBT to everyone and still to this day look at the tools to refresh my memory. I have even started using DBT with my children. Thank you to Matthew and their team for helping through a very dark time.

Anonymous Client

Being a part of the DBT Group has opened my eyes to some comforting truths: that I’m not alone in my struggles, that help and understanding is out there from peers as well as therapists, and that there are skills to learn that can help me manage the daily challenges I always seem to be facing.

I’ve found the DBT skills to be of great help in earning back competency, freedom of mind, and a healthy sense of control in my life. Having tools with which to navigate the difficulties of life, especially those created of my own mind, has opened doors for me that I felt were shut for good, and I feel the future is now manageable, and even hopeful.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Online DBT Courses

What Would You Like To Know?

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based psychological treatment originally developed by Dr Marsha Linehan to support people with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD/EUPD). It has since been shown to be highly effective for a wider range of conditions, including ADHD, autism, addiction, eating disorders, PTSD, and emotional dysregulation.

DBT works across four core skill areas: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness. Treatment combines weekly group skills training with individual therapy, giving clients both the practical tools and the personal support needed to apply new skills in everyday life. It is widely recognised as the gold standard treatment for BPD and emotion regulation difficulties.

CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) focuses primarily on identifying and changing unhelpful thought patterns. DBT was developed from CBT but goes significantly further — it adds a strong emphasis on acceptance alongside change, and specifically targets emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness as distinct skill areas.

DBT also includes group skills training as a core component of treatment, whereas CBT is typically delivered one-to-one only. For people experiencing intense emotional reactions, relationship difficulties, self-harm, or a history of trauma, DBT is generally considered more appropriate than CBT alone. If you are unsure which therapy is right for you, our clinical team can advise during your free initial consultation.

The Association for Psychological Therapies (APT) is a leading UK training and accreditation body for mental health and behavioural professionals. Their DBT Centre of Excellence accreditation is awarded only to services that meet rigorous standards across clinical practice, therapist training, programme delivery, and client outcomes.

Very few private DBT providers in the UK hold this accreditation — it means that when you join our programme, you can be confident you are receiving DBT delivered to the highest evidenced standard, by properly trained clinicians, within a quality-assured framework. It is not a self-awarded badge; it requires ongoing assessment and renewal by an independent professional body.

Our aim is to see you within 48 hours of contacting us.

Groups are run by one or two facilitators, each group begins with a check in, where you share with the group and skills trainers how you are doing and how your week has been. This is followed by a short mindfulness activity, to help ground and to try put different techniques to assist with your own practice.

Next, we look at the homework that was set from the previous week, you will be invited to share your homework and skills practice. It allows you to get feedback from the skills trainers in case of any problems encountered, it also serves as a valuable learning tool for other group members to hear how skills are being practiced in different contexts. Please not there is no requirement to share personal information or anything in depth, however it is an effective way of encouraging skills practice and increasing your mastery of skills over time. We will then look at the skills card to see how skills practice generally across the week has been. Usually at this point there will be a short comfort break.

We will then move on to the new skills being taught, this will involve teaching points, discussions, activities and examples to help explore Important concepts or aspects of the skills. We try to make there’s teaching sessions as interactive and as engaging as possible. There will always be opportunities to ask questions and practice the skills in group. Before finishing, the homework and skills practice will be set. As group comes to a close there’s a final check out and chance to ask questions.

The WhatsApp group is the primary method of communication for all things group related. Any information about group, homework or relevant links will all be posted in the group chat. It is also an opportunity to get skills advice or help with your homework.

As part of our clinical obligations, your safety and wellbeing is our priority. Between yourself and your therapist, together you will decide whether the lite or the full course is best. It is our clinical responsibility to provide appropriate care and provision to meet your needs.
